It was a tradition in both Ireland and Scotland to have someone draw 
lots (usually a charred bannock) and jump over the fire at Bealtaine, 
sometimes three times (maybe next year).

Some scholars say it is a remnant of a sacrificial practice; that you 
jump over the fire to simulate being put in it.  It is certainly a trail 
by fire, similar to other games we have played.
