I know that I heard a figure put out by the wedding commentators in Britain,
that just the American TV coverage alone, if purchased from the networks,
would have been over a billion dollars, so that would make it free
advertising worth over a billion dollars, for England generally, and London
specifically, as a tourist destination. 

I believe the tax burden comes from the fact that the royal family get all
of their wealth from the VAT that everyone pays whenever they purchase
anything. The royal family spent an estimated 14 million pounds on the
wedding, so that is really paid for by the British people.

I can't speak for sure and can't seem to find the dang article now, but I
read somewhere before the wedding took place that if the turn out was even
close to charles and di's wedding it would boost the british economy by a
stupid high number. I want to say it was between a quarter and half a
billion dollars.  Maybe guenhwyfar can clarify better than I. If I find the
article, I'll post it.
